Don’t throw inappropriate shapes on the dance floor

Dance is a human capacity. Not just one possible activity among others.

It is a capacity that must be exercised for a person to build a brain and a body capable of creating relationships with others in a given cultural environment. Dance is freedom, these images are about; freedom.

Dance is raw and unflustered humanity in all of its sparking glory!

In an age where discourse surrounding workplace politics is never more evident, the parody of a company event filled with formality and control, conflicts with the humour, creativity and humanity that free booze and a dance floor bring at the end of two days worth of meetings.

Every year 1.3 million business events are held in the UK; this project is witness to just a small number of those event endings. Where the autonomy of a homogeneous group of people come together and seem to form their own micro sub cultures, and without inhibition or judgement ; use their bodies to connect and break free. Partnered with current and true quotes taken from online blogs, websites, company conduct documents and advice articles; the dancing people either rebel or support these statements. The juxtaposition of these alongside the expectations of the corporate dance floor, are a source of entertainment and enjoyment, the fun paradox laid bare and the patterns of bodily movement helping to set us all free.

“A human is always creating patterns of bodily movement, where every new movement unfolds along an open - ended trajectory made possible by movements already made. Dancing can be seen as a means of participating in this rhythmn of bodily becoming.”
