“Barren, unoccupied, vacant, fruitless, depleted.”

This brief, experimental work formed part of my journalistic approach and story keeping when I was lucky enough to work with a couple, one of who was trans; female to male.

We visited a fertility clinic to discuss the options available to the couple as part of this transition and it shocked me at just how empty, sad and terribly lonely the building was that housed the entire fertility clinic.

A place of so many emotions, but certainly one that may be considered hopeful, was barren. Much like the old age descriptions used of an empty womb or a woman who does not bear children.

23 minutes was the entire consultation time, for which I was allowed in for just five. The rest I spent with other couples, individuals and family in the waiting room.
